Dean Village

Water of Leith Village

Dean Village (from 'Dene' meaning 'Deep valley') is situated 10 mins from Princes St and is one of Edinburgh's hidden treasures.

Previously known as The Water of Leith village, its was a successful grain milling area for over 800 years, the remains of which can still be seen today.

Well's Court is the most iconic building still standing in Dean Village. It was built in the 1880's for the workers of the Mills and was renovated with support from the Edinburgh World Heritage in the 1970's, for redevelopment into housing.

A little west of Dean Village you will also find Dean Gallery & the Gallery of Modern Art, with many free exhibitions.

The picturesque village, fascinating history and stunning architecture make Dean Village well worth the detour from the main tourist routes and as such, has recently been added to our Highlights Tours.
